StepPup is a free iPhone and Apple Watch app where your real steps decide how happy a virtual dog is. Walk more and your pup gets happier and your bond grows; skip a day and it notices. There are no in-app purchases and no subscriptions at all. I built StepPup, so this is the developer's guide to how it actually works. It has 4.2 stars from 5 ratings on the US App Store (September 2026). For screenshots and the download link, see the StepPup app page.
What is StepPup?
StepPup is a step counter wrapped in a pet game. It reads your steps, distance and calories from Apple Health, and those real numbers drive a virtual dog's mood, your XP and your bond level. I made it because a step total on its own never pulled me outside, but a small dog waiting by the door does.

How your steps affect your dog's happiness
Your daily step total is the main thing that moves your dog's mood. The mood runs on a scale from Depressed up to Ecstatic, and in the current version it reacts to your day like this:
- Under 2,500 steps: happiness drops. A day with no steps at all drops it the most.
- 2,500 to 5,000 steps: happiness holds steady.
- 5,000 to 10,000 steps: happiness rises, more so above 7,500.
- 10,000 steps or more: the biggest boost.
Mood also drifts down after several hours without any interaction, so petting your dog and giving it treats matter too. Consistency is rewarded: a dog you keep happy for a week earns a loyal status, and its mood falls more slowly on your off days. A dog that's been neglected loses happiness faster. Happier dogs also earn you bonus XP and coins, up to 20% extra when your dog is Ecstatic.
The practical upshot: you don't need 10,000 steps every day. Staying above about 5,000 most days keeps your dog content, and a few bigger days push it to the top. That's a gentler target than most step apps set, and it's deliberate.
Bond levels, XP and breeds
Every step earns XP toward your bond level with the dog you're walking. There are 25 bond levels, each with a title that grows from "Owner" through "Walker", "Companion" and "Best Buddy" up to "Best Friend Forever". Some levels unlock cosmetics such as collars, leashes and boots for that breed.
You start with a Beagle. The Golden Retriever, Husky, Shiba Inu, Frenchie, Great Dane and Corgi are adopted with coins you earn by walking. Two breeds are earned rather than bought: the Dalmatian unlocks at 100,000 total steps, and the German Shepherd unlocks when you reach the top bond level with any dog. Breeds also differ in temperament, so some bond faster than others.
Friends and weekly community challenges
StepPup gives you a friend code you can copy or share. Add a friend with theirs and you both appear on a friends leaderboard for steps, streaks and dog levels, and you can look at each other's dogs and walking streaks. Weekly community challenges put every player into the same goal for the week, with a widget on the main screen showing your progress and rank and bonus rewards for top places. There are also daily challenges, more than 50 achievements and Game Center leaderboards.
AR Photo Mode: pet your dog with your hand
Photo Mode puts your dog in front of your live camera, so it appears in your real room or on your real walk. The camera detects your hand, and you can pet the dog with a gesture. You can capture photos and videos to share. It's the least useful feature for fitness and the one people show their friends most.
How to get started
- Install StepPup and allow Apple Health access so it can read your steps, distance and calories.
- Meet your Beagle and name it.
- Take a short walk from the walk screen. You'll see steps, distance and calories tick up while your dog trots beside you.
- Pet your dog and give it a treat after the walk.
- Add the widget so you can check your dog's mood without opening the app.
- Share your friend code with one person who walks about as much as you do. Close rivals motivate more than runaway leaders.
Tips for keeping your dog happy
- Protect the floor, not the ceiling. A 5,000-step day every day beats one 15,000-step day and three quiet ones, because low days actively lower the mood.
- Check in twice a day. Mood drifts after hours without activity, so a quick pet at lunch helps.
- Walk with your Watch. Starting a walk on Apple Watch means you can leave your phone in your pocket.
- Aim for loyalty early. A week of good days earns the loyal status that softens every bad day after it.
What StepPup doesn't do, and who it isn't for
- It's Apple only. iPhone and Apple Watch; there's no Android version.
- It's not a serious training tool. There are no training plans, pace targets or heart-rate zones. For structured intervals, a timer like Tempo fits better.
- A sad dog can feel like guilt. The mood system is designed to nudge you, but if a sad pet on a sick day would bother you more than it motivates you, this isn't the right app.
- If you want journeys and maps instead of a pet, Simply Step turns steps into city journeys and a map of your neighborhood.
- If you're choosing between pet-style step apps, I compared StepPup with the best-known one in StepPup vs Walkr.
Why a pet works when a number doesn't
A daily step count resets every night and asks nothing of you. A pet that's visibly happier when you walk turns the same steps into something you're doing for someone. It's a small trick, and I wrote about more of them in how to trick yourself into walking more. If you're wondering how many steps you actually need, Is 10,000 steps a day a myth? goes through the research.
Frequently asked questions
Is StepPup really free?
Yes. StepPup is completely free, with no in-app purchases and no subscriptions. Breeds and cosmetics are unlocked with coins you earn in the app or with step milestones, never with real money.
How do my steps affect my dog in StepPup?
Your daily step total moves your dog's happiness. In the current version, a day under 2,500 steps lowers it, 2,500 to 5,000 holds it steady, 5,000 or more raises it, and 10,000 or more gives the biggest boost. Happiness also drifts down after several hours without activity, and petting and treats help.
Which dog breeds are in StepPup?
There are 9 breeds: Beagle, Golden Retriever, Husky, Shiba Inu, Frenchie, Great Dane, Corgi, Dalmatian and German Shepherd. The Beagle is the starter dog, most others are adopted with coins, the Dalmatian unlocks at 100,000 total steps and the German Shepherd unlocks when you reach the top bond level with any dog.
Does StepPup work with Apple Watch?
Yes. StepPup has an Apple Watch app for tracking walks, reads steps, distance and calories from Apple Health, and includes a Home Screen widget. It runs on iPhone and Apple Watch; there is no Android version.
