How to play Word Piles, the guess-the-quote puzzle game, with tips

Charles Chiejina · Updated · 5 min read

In Word Piles, a famous quote is broken into word tiles that tumble into a pile, and you guess the quote by tapping the words in the right order. Every wrong tap costs a life. I built it for people who like quotes and word puzzles, and it's free on iPhone and iPad with ads between levels. Word Piles Pro ($1.99 a month, $7.99 a year, or $6.99 once) removes the ads and adds lives and hints. Here's how each mode works and how to get better at it.

How to play a Classic level

Classic mode has 100 levels, each built around one quote. They get harder as the quotes get longer and the word order gets less obvious.

  1. Watch the words fall. The quote's words drop into a pile as tiles, mixed in with colored balls.
  2. Work out the quote. Read the tiles and figure out the sentence, or recognize it.
  3. Tap the words in order, from the first word to the last. Each correct tap clears that tile from the pile.
  4. Avoid wrong taps. Tapping a word out of order costs a life. Lose them all and the level fails.
  5. Clear the pile to solve the level. The full quote and its author are shown, and the quote goes into your library.

Stuck? A hint finds the next word for you and plays it.

Is Word Piles a cryptogram?

Not in the classic sense. In a newspaper cryptogram, every letter is swapped for a different letter and you crack the code. In Word Piles the words are real, just jumbled, so it's closer to a quote scramble. The App Store subtitle says "Cryptogram & Scramble Puzzle", but strictly speaking it's the scramble part. If you want pure letter substitution, this isn't that. If you like the moment a famous line clicks into place, it is.

The other modes

Daily Quote

One new quote every day, with a streak for consecutive days solved. You get one attempt: leaving mid-puzzle counts as a loss and ends your streak. You can turn on a daily reminder in Settings so you don't miss a day.

Letter Pile

A different game using the same pile. Single letters fall, and you tap them to spell words before the pile overflows. Each letter is worth a point, and gold letters triple the whole word. Freeze and Solve power-ups help when the pile gets high. Scores go on a Game Center leaderboard, with global and local tabs.

Create Mode

Type any sentence and watch it fall as a word pile. You can pick from 12 tile styles and 12 shapes (144 combinations; free users get the basic ones, Pro unlocks all of them), record a video of it, and save it as a level to play later.

Tips for solving quotes faster

  1. Read the whole pile before your first tap. It's tempting to tap the first word that looks like a start. Take a few seconds to scan everything first.
  2. Find the unusual words first. Words like "realization" or "difficulty" narrow the quote down far more than "the" or "of". Build the sentence around them in your head.
  3. Try to name the quote. Many levels are well-known lines from people like Einstein, Shakespeare or Roosevelt. If a phrase rings a bell, trust it, then check the pile.
  4. Watch the small words. "A", "the", "of" and "to" are where wrong taps happen. Before you tap one, say the next few words to yourself.
  5. Spend hints early in a level, not late. A hint on the first word, when you're unsure how the quote starts, saves more lives than one near the end.
  6. In Letter Pile, keep the pile low. Short words keep you alive. Save gold letters for a longer word, since the triple applies to the whole word.
